Skills Day of Phlebotomy Students at Penn Medicine Simulation Center is a free, interactive event designed to promote and enhance the knowledge and skills of phlebotomy students. Attendees receive a hands-on experience with real-world equipment and techniques, including; manual blood collection (via finger stick/CPAP), hemovigilance and specimen processing. Participants are then given the opportunity to participate in personal reflection exercises, as well as participate in a discussion on the challenges and rewards of becoming a phlebotomist.

First-time participants will be required to complete a short questionnaire prior to the event. Once this has been completed, attendees will then be given the opportunity to practice their phlebotomy skills on simulated patients. The event is open to our Phlebotomy students of CIHE. We aim on giving our students premium services and learning experience.

Today, there is a growing need for culturally-sensitive healthcare services that cater to the needs of ethnic minority communities. Healthcare professionals who can speak the same language and understand their culture are in high demand. As a result, many women of color are turning to healthcare fields as a way to give back and serve their communities. However, not everyone feels ready to take that step. That’s why the Cultural Institute for Health and Education exists – to break down barriers and create opportunities for women of color who want to work in the medical field. They offer free training and mentorship services tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. So if you’re interested in helping others while also mastering your own skills, keep reading for more information on this great opportunity. Have you ever wondered how this great program and organization started? Here’s a sneak peak of it.

Who is CIHE?

The Cultural Institute for Health and Education (CIHE) is a non-profit organization serving the Black community in Philadelphia. They aim to increase and promote the utilization of culturally-sensitive healthcare services to the underrepresented Black and Caribbean population in Southeastern Pennsylvania. They provide education, mentoring, and job placement services to individuals and organizations in order to help more people get healthcare careers. As a leader in helping women of color break into the healthcare field, CIHE offers a variety of services such as mentoring, leadership training, and even job opportunities. The organization was created because research shows that women of color are underrepresented in the healthcare field. A lack of cultural competency and unmet health needs for minority communities is a major cause for concern. CIHE hopes to bring attention to these issues and provide opportunities for women to gain the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in healthcare.

How Is CIHE Different From Other Healthcare Training Programs?

CIHE offers many different types of programs, from mentoring and networking opportunities to health advocacy training. They create a space for participants to share their skills and talents with one another while also learning new information. This creates a unique opportunity for those in the program to learn from each other while receiving expert guidance from healthcare professionals. CIHE also caters to a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Their training can help prepare you for different kinds of jobs, such as a medical assistant, nurse, social worker, phlebotomist etc.. Additionally, they offer free training and education to help make the program accessible to more people.

How did CIHE start?

CIHE began as a mentorship program in 2017. The founder saw a need for people of color to feel more empowered and connected in the community. After gaining popularity and receiving recognition from various organizations, CIHE was able to expand its services. They now offer mentorship programs, health education, a scholarship program, and we are doing our best to give more. The organization’s goal is to help build a healthier and more educated community by providing free services to all who need them. They believe that women of color deserve access to quality healthcare, educational opportunities, and mentorship from positive role models.
